Obituary for Ludwig Menzl

Ludwig "Lud" Menzl

Born to Eternal Life December 27, 2018, age 86 years. Beloved husband of 55 years to June (Nee Schultz). Loving father of Cheryl (Michael) Perdzock and Dina Menzl-Russo. Dear grandpa of Chris, Jenni and Alex. Brother of Robert (Rosi) Menzl. Brother-in-law of Ericka Menzl and Kenneth Schultz. Preceded in death by his parents Johann and Marie (nee Schlagel), brothers Johann “Hans” (Frieda) and Leo.

Ludwig came to the United States when he was 19 years old. He was sponsored by extended family members George and Gert Bauer and resided in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. He worked at the Bauer Hotel as a busboy learning the ways of the restaurant and hospitality business. His next chapter began at Lou Ehlers Buick. Lud had completed an auto mechanic apprenticeship in Germany and decided to put his skills to use. He found that his outgoing personality went well with auto sales and had his opportunity to sell cars at Lou Ehlers Buick as well. Excelling in his new found talent, in 1957 he won an award for the most cars sold in a month at the dealership.

In 1957 he purchased a Texaco station in Milwaukee where he also went into the towing business. This was a stepping-stone from which he built Menzl’s Towing Service Inc., one of the largest and most modern towing and recovery companies in Wisconsin. The business thrived for decades as the main service provider for the City of Milwaukee.

Ludwig is the founder of the Wisconsin Towing Association and the initial organizer of the W-TON Brewer’s Tailgate Fundraiser. He received the Frank W. Babbitt Award (now known as the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Hall of Fame) and was also inducted to the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame in 1991.

“Lud” was very active in legislative issues at the state level on behalf of the towing and recovery industry. He served as Chairman, Board Director, and Honorary Director for the Wisconsin Towing Association and was a member of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association.

Ludwig is a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Brookfield Masonic Lodge #370, Shriners, Royal Order of Jesters, Milwaukee Caravan El Hajj and Quiet Birdmen (QB’s).

Lud loved the game of golf, and played up until he had his stroke in September 2004. He was an active member of North Hills Country Club, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He served as President of North Hills Country Club and sat on the Board of Directors. His other hobbies included fishing and cooking. He was especially known for his “brats” who became synonymous with the W-TON Brewer Tailgate Fundraiser and many other events to which he offered up his cooking talent. Acquiring his private pilot’s license was another milestone for Lud. He was always thrilled to show off his fine pilot skills whenever a friend or family member needed a lift. His travels and adventures kept him full of comical stories that only Lud could tell with his side-splitting humor.

His story was a classic “American Dream”. He loved this country like he was born here. HE WAS AN AMERICAN AND SO PROUD OF IT. He was brave to come here alone, leaving his family in Germany. He suffered many losses, heartbreaks and difficulties. His commitment to himself and his family kept him pushing for new goals, some of which, by today’s standards, almost seem impossible given his circumstances. Lud was kind, generous, fair but also tough. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Ludwig’s Life will take place on Tuesday, January 8 from 1:00 PM, until the Masonic Service under the Auspices of Lodge #370 F. & A. M. at 4:00 PM.

A Sincere thanks to all of dads caregivers at The Congregational Home, Legacy Hospice, Tender Reflections and Linden Grove of Menomonee Falls. Immediately following the services at Harder Funeral Home the family cordially invites everyone to North Hills Country Club for further fellowship and dinner.
