Obituary for John F. Maloney

Passed away peacefully at the age of 70, on June 30, 2018, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of the late Jerrilyn (nee Foster) for 39 years. Loving father of Katie (Brian) Perhach and Michael (Terri) Maloney. Proud grandpa of Jack, Matthew and Benjamin Perhach and Addison and Sadie Maloney. John will always be remembered by his sisters, Marbeth (Mel) Foley, Susan (Ralph) Celentani, and Anne (Steve) Heaney, and his brother James (Connie) Maloney. He will further be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives, colleagues, and friends, including his beloved friend, Dr. Joan von Arras.

John was born in Chicago, Illinois to Jack and Mercedes (Lynch) Maloney. His family moved to Wauwatosa in 1962, and John started high school as a sophomore at Marquette University High School. He would often credit the school and the Jesuits for changing and saving his life. After graduation, he went on to receive his undergraduate degree in history from Marquette University in 1969 and his law degree from Marquette Law School in 1972. He was an incredibly proud “Triple M’er.” John spent the next 46 years practicing as a civil litigator and trial attorney, helping his clients with a wide range of legal issues including business disputes, environmental regulations, open meetings, public records, and municipal laws, advertising litigation, and class actions. He had many notable and reported Wisconsin Supreme Court decisions not the least of which included preserving his client’s right to sunshine to power his solar panels and the application of the state’s antitrust act to interstate commerce. He also regularly advised his clients on wealth preservation, family succession issues, and related corporate and real estate matters.

John was the first in his family to receive a college degree and because he knew how important and life changing that college degree was, he became actively involved with the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation, as a member of the Board of Governors. He considered it an honor and a privilege to work with the Evans Scholars at Marquette University and to support the mission of the Foundation to provide full housing and tuition scholarships to deserving caddies at nineteen leading universities across the country.
