Obituary for Sally Ann Winter

Sally Winter, 70 years of age, peacefully passed on to eternal life on December 2, 2018 with family by her side, following a sudden hospitalization after a heart attack. Cherished aunt and godmother of Keri (Jeff) Robbins and Larry (Jill) Shotola. Thoughtful and caring great aunt of Daniel, Julia, Ava, Ella, and Clara. Lifelong friends and traveling companions include Mary Ann Searing, Drusella Becker, and Roger Anderson. Good natured sister-in-law of Bill Shotola and cousin of Rick (Debbie) Goerg. Further survived by many dear friends from the close-knit group of faculty at Juneau High School, the Women of Note choir, and Clement Manor, along with countless other friends, neighbors, relatives, and former students. Preceded in death by her loving parents (Lawrence and Rosemarie Winter, of Milwaukee) and her devoted sister Joan Shotola (November 10, 2018).
Sally graduated Valedictorian from Custer High School (1966) and also excelled during college, earning a master’s degree in education and completing additional credentials. She taught English in Milwaukee Public Schools from 1970-2003. She retired from Juneau High School, where she served as department chair, yearbook advisor, and unflappable advisor to the prom committee during the 1980s and 1990s. She found joy in all types of literature (Shakespeare to fan fiction), theater, art, TV, and films, drawing on a huge range of entertainment topics and current events to make connections with anyone she encountered.

Sally traveled extensively throughout the United States and other countries, bringing home so many gifts for others that she often needed an extra suitcase just for gifts. She always remembered and acknowledged birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, and significant events. Her generosity and unwavering kindness were widely known and appreciated. Her affinity for unicorns revealed her fondness for whimsy and strong belief in the divine power that sustains all living creatures.

Sally enjoyed the camaraderie as much as the music in her choir groups. Her self-deprecating humor, free-flowing conversation, and unassuming demeanor made her a welcome presence anywhere. She recognized the interests and nurtured the talents of others, always offering praise and support.

A cheerful and gentle soul, Sally will be greatly missed until we meet again.

A memorial gathering to honor and remember Sally will be held at CLEMENT MANOR, 3939 S. 92nd St., Greenfield on Thursday, December 6 from 9:30 AM, until the time Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Private interment at Wisconsin Memorial Park for immediate family.
