Obituary for Hermann "HJ" Horner

Horner, Hermann Josef “HJ” was called home by God surrounded by his devoted family Anne, Markus and Rae Ann on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the age of 78. Loving, cherished husband to Anne (nee Hartung). Proud and loving father to Markus (Rae Ann) Horner. Devoted brother to Markus (Maria) Horner, Elsie, (Hermann) Eder and uncle to Renate, Markus and Manuela Horner, Brigitte and Anita Eder and Gerlinde and Robert Horner in Austria. Preceded in death by brother Johann and Hilde Horner in Austria. Caring brother-in-law to Veronica Tirberger and uncle to Brian, Lisa, Victoria and Charles Tirberger and the late Lorie and Steven Sieghold. Also survived by other relatives and many dear friends both in America and Europe.

Hermann was born in Hüttau, a small village in Austria. As a child he went to work as a shepherd in the nearby Austrian mountains. During that time as a shepherd, Hermann was an altar boy at his church in Hüttau, beginning the groundwork to his faith. In 1960, Hermann journeyed to America, joining his childhood friend, Helmut Rohmann, who was already residing in Wisconsin. There, Hermann began working in construction and met his bride to be, Anne. Married in 1968, Hermann and Anne were six weeks shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Shortly after marriage, Hermann and Anne started their own business in 1969 which he continued until he retired in 2012.

In the late 1970s, Hermann and his close friend Walter Regal joined the Detroit Ski Club for a ski trip to Europe. It was on these trips that Hermann met his dear friend Karl-Heinz Zander, whom he would continue to meet on ski trips for the next 40 years. Whenever possible, Hermann would go home to Austria to ski with his family along with Karl-Heinz and the Zander Family. In addition to skiing, Herman enjoyed spending time between Fort Myers Beach, Brookfield and at Enterprise Lake, Wisconsin. Hermann also enjoyed spending time with his close friends on Wednesday nights at the Schwabenhof. Hermann was a founding member of the Austrian American Society and honorary member of the Mucsi Family Club and annual volunteer at Milwaukee’s Germanfest.
